Master Planning

These services are directed at the dynamic and critical needs of thousands of existing courses operating worldwide. Courses are in a continual stage of change, either by external forces, i.e., highways or land use, or internally from obsolescence, and/or need to update greens, lengthen holes for the modern game, or update the irrigation systems.

Regardless, each course should have a master plan for improvements just as well run cities and private businesses need capital improvements programs.

Changes to irrigation technology, maintenance procedures, as well as the game itself have caused many, if not most, courses to need more length. Any major change such as updating greens or irrigation should cause careful consideration as to minor or even major rerouting to add length, eliminate conflicts, create more practice range space, and/or a whole host of other benefits. Most of the time, such rerouting in the framework of a master plan, will create little if any additional cost other than the original cost of the green rebuilding or irrigation etc. Finding better green sites with better air circulation and/or fits the land better often can free up wasted land areas and create a better, more challenging and playable golf course. Within these parameters, needed minor improvements for maintenance, playability, and aesthetics can easily be staged or phased along with the more extensive improvements in the golf course renovation or restoration program. These activities and analyses can be summarized as follows:

  • Course base mapping and inventory;

  • Analysis of problem areas, greens sites, conflicts, and opportunities;

  • Structuring and prioritizing input from maintenance, operations, greens committees and membership;

  • Routing alternatives and improvement priorities;

  • Long range master plan;

  • Costing, and staging of improvements.
